Description:
PCGS AU58 Continental Dollar, CURRENCY Spelling
1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURRENCY, Pewter AU58 PCGS. Newman-2C. 38.3 mm. 268.98 grains (17.43 grams). Actually struck in tin, but the popular notion that these coins are made of pewter will not die. Breen notes that "specimens are mostly dull," but this coin is highlighted by substantial portions of mint luster and much of the original brightness remains. The surfaces are medium gray in color and the devices are sharply defined throughout. Continental dollars are popular and enigmatic coins that are now believed to be patterns authorized by the Continental Congress. Listed on page 33 of the 2004 Guide Book. (#794) (PCGS# 794)
