Announcement: Sunday & Tuesday Internet Coin Auctions and Weekly World and Ancient Coin Auctions move to Heritage Live!

Our Weekly Internet Coin Auctions and World and Ancient Coin Auctions are closing with live, online auctions on HA.com's Heritage Live! platform beginning with the Internet Coin Auction that ends Sunday, September 21st and the World and Ancient Coin Auction that ends on Thursday, September 25th. Each lot is offered one at a time, in lot number order, in live auctions beginning at 8:00 PM CT. During this part of the auction, live bidders will be on Heritage Live! competing with each other and with previously placed Internet bids. The lot opens, requests live bids, and then closes when the bidding is finished. There is no change in how you place your secret maximum bids during the week the auctions are open on HA.com. In addition, once bidding on HA.com ends, 2 hours before the live sessions start, you still have the option to leave proxy bids through Heritage Live!

For more information about Heritage Live!, please visit HA.com/live. If you have any questions about this exciting format change, please contact us at 800-872-6467 or Bid@HA.com.

Description:
1776 Continental Dollar, MS64
Newman 3-D, W-8460, EG FECIT
1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURRENCY, Pewter, EG FECIT MS64 PCGS Secure. Newman 3-D, Hodder 3-B, W-8460, Low R.4. Ex: Charles Jay Collection. The EG FECIT inscription tells us that someone with the initials "EG" made these coins. The EG of that inscription was Elisha Gallaudet, who engraved plates for the February 17, 1776, Continental paper money that used the same design. He also engraved certain other contemporary paper issues including the New York Water Works notes, as well as book plates, and an important engraving of the Reverend George Whitfield, the English-born 18th century evangelist.
Gallaudet was born at New Rochelle, New York, the son of the Huguenot settler Pierre Gallaudet. He was the fifth of nine children. After an apprenticeship, Gallaudet worked as a New York City engraver from about 1756 until his death. The younger Gallaudet was married to Jeanne Dubois in 1755, and they had eight children. After her death, he remarried Naomi Reade in 1770, and they were the parents of Elisha, Jr. The family fled New York the same year that the Continental dollars were minted, settling in Freehold, New Jersey, where he died in 1779.
This impressive specimen features a semicircular die crack on the reverse that connects nearly all of the rings. The surfaces are remarkable with two shades of gray, retaining noticeable luster. There are only a few trivial surface marks that are expected on any 235-year-old coin. Eye appeal is excellent. Listed on page 81 of the 2012 Guide Book.
