Description:
Near-Gem Rhode Island Ship Token
Brass, Wreath Below Ship, W-1740
1778-1779 Rhode Island Ship Token, Wreath Below, Brass MS64 PCGS. Betts-563, W-1740, R.4. The Rhode Island ship medal was struck in England while the Revolutionary War was still in progress. The peripheral legends imply a Dutch audience for the medal, and refer to a British naval victory over the Yankees. A wreath replaces the initial ungrammatical VLUGTENDE legend. This well struck piece is free from visible contact or carbon. Mellowed orange-red and yellow-gold color graces this original near-Gem. Listed on page 50 of the 2013 Guide Book. Population: 2 in 64, 0 finer (10/12).
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2004), lot 4046, which realized $4,887.50. (PCGS# 587)
