Description:
Pewter Wreath Below Rhode Island Ship Token AU55
1778-1779 TOKEN Rhode Island Ship Token, Wreath Below, Pewter AU55 PCGS. Breen-1142. The Rhode Island Ship token is a British propaganda medal, intended to keep the Dutch from taking the American side during the Revolutionary War. There are three major subtypes. An extremely rare variety has VLUGTENDE on the lower exergue. This word was subject to misinterpretation, and thus effaced from struck examples for the second variety. The final major variety replaces VLUGTENDE with a wreath on the die. Most Rhode Island Ship tokens are struck in brass or copper. PCGS has only certified a total of eight examples in pewter. This sharp example has light gray fields and deeper dove-gray devices. There are no relevant marks, but moderate verdigris is noted on the reverse at 12 and 2 o'clock. Listed on page 48 of the 2007 Guide Book.

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
