Description:
Probable Finest Known 1783 Chalmers Shilling, Short Worm, AU55 PCGS
1783 SHLNG Chalmers Shilling, Short Worm AU55 PCGS. Breen-1011, Crosby Pl. IX, 6 and figure 69. 55.5 grains. Captain John Chalmers, a former Continental Army recruiting officer, offered to strike silver coins for the Continental Congress in 1783. Although his proposal was rejected, Chalmers continued to produce coins at his mint on Fleet and Cornhill Streets in Annapolis, Maryland. Shillings, Sixpence, and Threepence were produced, all of which are rare. The Short Worn variety of the Shilling is the most frequently encountered Chalmers issue, but we have never handled a finer representative than this Choice AU coin, and we doubt whether one exists. The planchet is extremely choice with no bothersome striking impairments save for a nearly bisecting die break (as produced) on the obverse. Both sides are also equally free of mentionable handling marks, and the impression, while slightly off center, is uncommonly sharp for the type. In fact, the only features missing are the denticles at the right borders. Richly and originally toned, the otherwise even endowment of medium gray patina yields to warm reddish-orange and steel-blue undertones at certain angles. The reverse is rotated several degrees clockwise in relation to the obverse. An obviously important offering for the dedicated Colonial collector. Listed on page 30 of the 2002 Guide Book. (PCGS# 596)
