Formidable MS63 Brown Maris 20-N
1786 Wide Shield New Jersey Copper
Ex: Ryder, Boyd, Ford
1786 COPPER New Jersey Copper, Wide Shield MS63 Brown NGC. Maris 20-N, R.4. 171.7 gn. A remarkable medium brown New Jersey copper that shimmers with mint luster and retains delicate die polish lines throughout the reverse field. Crisply struck despite a failing obverse die near the end of the plow beam. A heavy crack travels through most of the date to the rim beneath the plow.
As on Maris 18-N and 19-M, the date is amateurishly engraved (as made), the 1 entered at an extreme angle to keep it from touching a dentil. The head of the horse was punched too high, and leans precariously to the left. On the reverse, E PLURIBUS is closely spaced, while UNUM is unduly wide. The reverse die was better made, however, since it lasted through pairings with the Maris 18, 20, and 21 obverses, while Maris 20-N marks the only appearance of the obverse die.
Although in well circulated grades the Maris 20-N is merely scarce within the New Jersey series, it would take a Herculean effort to secure a different Uncirculated example, provided such a coin even exists. Listed on page 66 of the 2009 Guide Book. As of (11/08), NGC has certified only a single example (the present coin) of the Wide Shield variety. PCGS has certified just one piece as Uncirculated, also as MS63 Brown. That New Jersey copper is a Maris 16-J and appeared in November 2006 Stack's auction, where it realized $36,800.
