Description

1787 Massachusetts Half Cent, AU58
W-5910, Elusive Above XF

1787 1/2 C Massachusetts Half Cent AU58 NGC. Ryder 2-A, W-5910, R.3. The Massachusetts coinage was well produced, under the direction of Mr. Joshua Witherle, but the venture proved unprofitable for the state, and the mint was closed in January 1789. The W-5910 variety of the 1787 half cent is distinguished by the ray of the star pointing at the Indian's eyebrow on the obverse, and the high position of both 8s in the date. The W-5910 variety is quite difficult to locate in grades above XF. The present coin shows only slight traces of wear on the sharply defined design elements, while traces of original red color can be detected outlining some of the devices. Listed on page 57 of the 2011 Guide Book. MRB AU55.
