Description:
1787 1C Fugio Cent, STATES UNITED, Raised Rim--Planchet Flaw--NGC Details. Fine. Newman 12-Z, W-6975, R.5. This is the popular Label With Raised Rims Guide Book variety, the Newman Z reverse which the Whitman Colonial Encyclopedia calls "one of the most curious and distinctive of the reverses." The effect of raised label rims was actually created by the removal of extra material from between the letters of STATES UNITED. The reverse is here paired with the Newman 12 obverse, displaying two lobes of a cinquefoil pointing to the F of FUGIO and another pointing above and below the O of that same word. The mentioned planchet flaw is just above the O, running through the sun's rays at left. Another smaller flaw is in the lower-right sundial area, and three flawed areas appear on the reverse. Medium chocolate-brown surfaces show moderate contact as well. Listed on page 84 of the 2011 Guide Book. MRB VG8.
Purchased from Kenneth W. Rendell (11/8/1958).
