1787 COPPER Vermont Copper, BRITANNIA VF30 PCGS. RR-13. ...
1787 COPPER Vermont Copper, BRITANNIA VF30 PCGS. RR-13. This is the first Vermont coin that was struck at Machin's Mills in Newburgh, New York, from dies by James Atlee. The mailed bust right is patterned after the portrait of King George III, and the seated Liberty on the reverse is actually a crude reproduction of Britannia. The obverse is sharply defined but the reverse is poorly detailed, this weakness being deliberately done as an evasive device of the coiners, noted makers of counterfeit, lightweight British Halfpennies a this time. The surfaces are very dark with lighter, tan colored accents over the design elements. Listed on page 52 of the 2002 Guide Book. (PCGS# 554)
