Description:
Gem Brown Ryder 1-B
1788 Massachusetts Half Cent
1788 1/2 C Massachusetts Half Cent MS65 Brown PCGS. Ryder 1-B, W-6010, R.2. A splendid Gem with smooth chocolate-brown fields and unabraded devices. There are no planchet imperfections. The obverse is misaligned a few degrees toward 1 o'clock with the strike slightly soft in that area and at the centers. The remainder of the surfaces are well struck. An early die state without the vertical break through the second 8 in the date. Ryder 1-B is identified by a widely repunched second A in MASSACHUSETTS. It shares the obverse die with the scarcer Ryder 1-A, the only other 1788 half cent variety. Listed on page 59 of the 2013 Guide Book. Population: 3 in 65 Brown, 1 finer (10/12).
Ex: Denver Signature (Heritage, 8/2006), lot 36, which realized $9,200.
