Description:
1788 New Jersey Copper, Head Left
Maris 50-f
XF40, Conditional Rarity
1788 COPPER New Jersey Copper, Head Left XF40 PCGS. CAC. Maris 50-f, R.2. Forget the rarity factor here. Although this is the most available by far of the three known Head Left varieties cataloged by Maris--with the N in NOVA CAESAREA closest to the beam of the plow--the average grade of certified survivors is only in the range of Fine to Very Fine at best. This is a conditionally much rarer piece, and in fact this is only the second time since we began maintaining our Permanent Auction Archives that we have offered an XF example of the Head Left variant.
This Extremely Fine specimen should make a pleasing acquisition for some fortunate bidder. The smooth, milk-chocolate fields are essentially free of contact, but the strike, as often seen, is off-center toward 8:30 on the obverse, with the dentilation bold opposite at 2:30 and correspondingly on the reverse. Some minor strike softness and a small planchet lamination also occur on the central reverse. Listed on page 67 of the 2009 Guide Book. (PCGS# 527)
