Description:
Born Virginia 1792 Washington Cent
Choice AU, Legend Reverse, Baker-60
1792 1C Washington Born Virginia Cent, Inscribed Reverse AU55 PCGS. Baker-60, W-10730, R.5. Teenaged John Gregory Hancock of the Westwood Mint in England is credited as engraver of the Born Virginia cent. He was also responsible for the 1791 Large and Small Eagle cents and Liverpool halfpenny, all of which have similar portraits of Washington. On the present type, the reverse legends denote key dates in Washington's life through 1789, neglecting the 1759 marriage to Martha that made him among the richest men in the Colonies. Baker-60 is very scarce, and when encountered, is often well worn. PCGS has certified one piece as Fair 2. But here is an unusually nice example with minimal wear and deep walnut-brown toning. Listed on page 82 of the 2013 Guide Book. (PCGS# 723)
