Description:
1795 Washington Grate Halfpenny
MS64 Red and Brown

Large Buttons, Reeded Edge, Baker 29-A
1795 1/2P Washington Grate Halfpenny, Large Buttons, Reeded Edge MS64 Red and Brown NGC. Baker 29-A, W-10955, R.1. The 1795 Washington Grate halfpenny tokens were produced in large quantities to advertise the firm of Clark & Harris, London. The Baker 29-A variety is distinguished by the large buttons on Washington's coat and the diagonal edge reading, which slopes down to the right on Baker 29-A. The present piece is a sharply detailed Choice example, with traces of original red color outlining the devices. This specimen is the single finest example certified in the Red and Brown category by NGC, while PCGS has graded a single piece finer (9/10). Listed on page 79 of the 2011 Guide Book. MRB MS64.
Ex: ANA Convention Auction (New Netherlands, 8/1952), included in lot 2419 along with a 1794 Franklin Press cent, realized $12.50.
