Description:
Near-Mint 1795 North Wales Halfpenny
Plain Edge, Baker-34
1795 1/2P Washington North Wales Halfpenny, Plain Edge AU58 PCGS. Baker-34, W-11150, R.3. The usual reverse variety with one star at each side of the harp. An unabraded example with rich olive-brown toning and ample shimmering luster within the legends. A diagonal band of golden-brown crosses much of the reverse. The fields display clear die polish lines, a confirmation of marginal (if any) actual circulation. The nonspecialist upon first glance might consider this piece to grade Fine because of the worn appearance of the portrait and harp. However, this is completely due to a deliberately soft central strike, in order to convey the impression that the coin had long passed as a copper in commerce. There is no such thing as a well-struck North Wales halfpenny. Listed on page 84 of the 2013 Guide Book. Population: 2 in 58, 0 finer (10/12).
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2007), lot 2060, which realized $6,900. (PCGS# 770)
