Description

1820 North West Company Token
W-9292, XF Details, Copper Rarity

1820 TOKEN North West Company Token, Copper -- Environmental Damage -- NGC Details. XF. Breen-1084, W-9252, High R.6. Holed at 12 o'clock as nearly always, this piece has heavy surface corrosion, typical of most surviving specimens. In the Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins, Dave Bowers writes that "examples actually used in trade are holed at top for suspension on a cord. Two without holes have been reported." One of the two reported pieces is illustrated in that reference, the same piece illustrated in the current Guide Book.
The underlying details are rather remarkable and seem to approach Mint State, in our opinion, despite the conservative NGC description. The surfaces exhibit various colors, with dark steel predominant. Listed on page 74 of the 2011 Guide Book.
