Description

1905 Lewis and Clark Gold Dollar, MS66+
Key to the Commemorative Gold Dollars

1905 G$1 Lewis and Clark MS66+ NGC. The Lewis and Clark commemorative gold dollar was promoted by Farran Zerbe and first issued with a 1904 date. Commemorative gold dollars were decidedly unpopular with numismatists because collectors had been burned by the high priced Louisiana Purchase dollars in 1903, and more than half the original mintage of the 1904 issue was eventually melted. Despite the lack of collector enthusiasm, Zerbe tried again with the 1905 gold dollar, with similar results. The 1905 issue enjoyed a limited distribution of 10,041 pieces, and is about 20% rarer in today's market than the 1904.
The present coin is a high-end Premium Gem, with vibrant mint luster and attractive greenish-gold surfaces. The design elements exhibit bold details, and a minor contact mark on Lewis' cheek is the only mark of note. Census: 1 in 66+, 4 finer (10/11).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# BYLG, PCGS# 7448)
