Description:
1905 Lewis and Clark Gold Dollar, MS66
A Key Commemorative Gold Issue
1905 G$1 Lewis and Clark MS66 NGC. Gold dollars were struck in 1904 and 1905 to commemorate the Northwest Territory discovery and exploration by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark from 1803 to 1806. Typical grades range from About Uncirculated to lower Mint State, many of which reveal evidence of handling. Near-Gems and Gems can be located with patience and searching, but Premium Gems are scarce, and finer pieces are quite rare. The 1905 is the scarcer of the two issues and is considered a key to the commemorative gold series.

Attractive peach-gold color and pleasing luster cascades over both sides of the MS66 offering in the present lot, and a solid strike leaves strong definition on the design elements. A slight "orange-peel" effect occurs around the borders (actually die wear from overuse of these dies) is not unusual for the issue. Census: 55 in 66 (2 in 66+), 4 finer (3/13).
