Description:

1915-S Octagonal Panama-Pacific Fifty Dollar
Lustrous Gem Example of This Remarkable Commemorative Gold Piece
1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Octagonal MS65 PCGS Secure. CAC. The 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco was a spectacle on a scale that the world had never seen before, a befitting commemoration of the monumental task of completing the Panama Canal joining the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The 625 acres of exhibits, valued at $50 million and costing that much more to build, included the Liberty Bell brought from Philadelphia, more than 250 groups of statuary sculpted by world-class artists, 65 acres of amusement concessions, an "art palace, the architecture of which is more beautiful than any part of ancient Greece, and which contains the largest and most comprehensive collection of pictures ever collected and shown in one place" (according to the official brochure), and an assembly line producing Model T Ford automobiles.
If one were in the mood for celebrity-watching, among the noteworthy attendees to the exposition were comedian-actors Charlie Chaplin and Fatty Arbuckle, "March King" John Philip Sousa, Buffalo Bill Cody, motion-picture director D. W. Griffith, and singer Al Jolson.
The gargantuan exhibition, rising like a phoenix from the ashes of the 1906 earthquake and fire, established San Francisco's modern-day reputation as a world-class city, among the most beautiful in the world. The 1915-S Panama-Pacific fifty dollar gold coins were a fitting commemoration of the monumental display, huge, medallic gold pieces that are the largest of the classic era of U.S. numismatics, with a historic beauty that harkens back to antiquity. To some numismatists' taste, the design of the pieces surpasses even the artistry of the legendary Augustus Saint-Gaudens. In fact, in the reference 100 Greatest U.S. Coins the reader will find the MCMVII High Relief double eagle and the "MCMXV-S" Pan-Pac pieces on facing pages, ranked numbers 25 and 26, respectively.
This beautiful Gem embodies all the artistry put into these coins by Robert Aitken. The surfaces glow with soft mint luster and each side has lovely orange-gold patina. There are no obvious or distracting marks on either side. Three tiny planchet flakes behind the nose of Liberty are the only remotely usable identifiers for pedigree purposes.
