Description:
Choice AU 1915-S Panama-Pacific
Fifty Dollar Round
1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Round AU55 PCGS. This is an unusual example of this popular commemorative coin in that it is circulated, although not much so. Despite the unusual appearance, examples of both the round and octagonal versions of these commemoratives clearly circulated; PCGS has certified examples of each in grades down to Very Good, although most circulated pieces fall in the AU55-AU58 range.
When one stops to consider, it is unsurprising that circulated examples do exist. The original issue price of $100 was in the neighborhood of a month's wages for the average worker at the time. The pieces perhaps enjoyed more sentimental value for visitors who actually attended the 1915 San Francisco exposition than, say, for their heirs a decade or so later, for whom the face value of fifty dollars must have proven a powerful temptation.
This antique-gold example still retains its original glory, including most of the luster and few mentionable abrasions, despite the light rub that appears as a slight color change over the high points of each side. The reverse, in particular, appears choice for the grade, but both sides are immensely appealing.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 26HM, PCGS# 7451)
