Description

1951 Washington-Carver Half, MS67
Lightly and Evenly Toned

1951 50C Washington-Carver MS67 PCGS. CAC. Some of the Washington-Carver half dollars were struck from silver obtained by melting down remaining unsold examples of the earlier Booker T. Washington commemorative halves; this should have been taken as a bad omen, but it was not. Nonetheless, of the 110,000-plus 1951 Washington-Carver halves, it is estimated that 90,000 of them were melted, for a net distribution around 20,000 pieces. This piece is one of only two to receive this grade at PCGS, and none are finer (4/13). Both sides show the high points and all areas to be devoid of mentionable contact, with surfaces that are pinkish-gray in the centers to light jade near the rims. A beautiful coin.(Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 28MS, PCGS# 9430)
