Gem Proof 1861 Haseltine Restrike Confederate Cent1861 1C CSA Copper Restrike PR65 Red and Brown NGC. Breen-8008. One of the 55 pieces struck in copper by Captain John Haseltine in 1874, from the original dies engraved by Robert Lovett Jr. These are not to be confused with the common Robert Bashlow restrikes from defaced dies, circa 1962. This well struck piece exhibits the diagnostic curved die lines near CENT. Luminous orange-gold luster emerges from protected areas. The fields are toned deep cherry-red, and the portrait is medium brown. A smooth and pleasing example of this rare restrike issue. Since only 12 originals are known, and these trade for spectacular prices, the Haseltine restrikes from the original dies provide a desirable yet affordable alternative. Listed on page 375 of the 2007 Guide Book.
