Description

Scott Restrike 1861 Confederate Half
MS62, Better Grade Host Coin

1861 50C Scott Restrike MS62 NGC. Breen-8002. J.W. Scott acquired the original die for the Confederate half from Ebenezer Locke Mason in 1879, who in turn had purchased it from New Orleans Mint Chief Coiner Dr. B.F. Taylor. Scott secured 500 1861-dated half dollars, planed off the reverses, and used the CSA die to create restrikes that simulate an original Confederate half. All restrikes show softness of details on the Seated Liberty side, which on the present piece approaches Mint State sharpness and has a lengthy and interesting retained lamination. Since the four original Confederate half dollars are essentially unobtainable, the Scott restrikes remain popular today. Light golden-brown toning visits the borders of this unabraded example. Listed on page 404 of the 2013 Guide Book. Census: 16 in 62, 23 finer (8/12). (NGC ID# 2C4R, PCGS# 340402)
