1861 50C Scott Restrike MS62 PCGS. Breen-8002....
1861 Scott Restrike CSA Half, MS621861 50C Scott Restrike MS62 PCGS. Breen-8002. In 1879, numismatic author Ebenezer Locke Mason had the most famous transaction of his career. He purchased the original Confederate half dollar die from B.F. Taylor, who was Chief Coiner at the New Orleans Mint at the advent of the Civil War. Mason, in turn, sold the numismatically momentous die to a leading dealer of the day, J.W. Scott. Scott promptly acquired 500 1861-O half dollars, then a common date, and planed off their reverses. Those sides were stamped with the Confederate die, creating a numismatic keepsake similar in appearance to the four known original Confederate half dollars. However, the Seated side usually showed light wear, in addition to some flatness from Scott's second strike. The present example has a well struck semiprooflike Confederate obverse and XF details on the Seated reverse. Minimally abraded and toned medium golden-brown and powder-blue. (PCGS# 340402)
