Description

Moderately Prooflike MS63
JR-4 1796 Dime

1796 10C MS63 NGC. JR-4, R.4. A moderate number of Mint State 1796 dimes survive from a Guide Book mintage of 22,135 pieces. Walter Breen was fond of stating they were saved as "first of their kind." No documentation exists to support his statement, although the 1797 is significantly rarer in Uncirculated grades. High grade 1796 dimes tend to be from either JR-1 or JR-4 dies. The present Select Mint State piece has excellent eye appeal. Both sides have mirrored fields and mostly sharp details except for the centers. The obverse has delicate gold with peripheral iridescence and the reverse has light champagne toning. Census: 23 in 63 (1 in 63+), 38 finer (2/13).(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 236B, PCGS# 4461)
