1797 10C 16 Stars MS61 NGC. JR-1, R.4....
1797 Dime, 16 Stars, JR-1, Mint State1797 10C 16 Stars MS61 NGC. JR-1, R.4. The 1797 dimes are known from two main subtypes, the 16 Stars and 13 Stars obverses, the latter produced after Mint personnel realized the folly of continually adding stars as new states joined the Union. Only a single die was paired with both obverses, producing the two varieties known for the year. This example of the 16 Stars JR-1 is better-struck than usually seen, showing only minor high-point softness in the immediate centers. Marks are few; the only contact of note is a short planchet depression at the top of Liberty's breast. The satiny surfaces display a hint of golden-gray patina on each side. An attractive Mint State example of this very scarce early dime die combination.(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 236C, PCGS# 4462)
