Description

Uncirculated 1800 Dime
Scarcer JR-2 Variety

1800 10C MS60 NGC. JR-2, R.5. The two varieties of the year share the same obverse die but the reverses, though similar, differ. JR-2, the present and rarer variety, depicts the eagle "biting" a point of a star. The star is separate from the beak on JR-1. The present lightly toned example has a hint of chestnut patina near the borders while the centers remain brilliant. The strike is crisp aside from the eagle's breast feathers. The reverse is essentially unabraded, though the obverse has thin marks beneath the ear and through serifs of the IB in LIBERTY. Census: 1 in 60, 5 finer (2/13).
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/2006), lot 1004, which realized $25,300.(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 236H, PCGS# 4470)
