1804 JR-1 Dime, 13 Stars Reverse, VF301804 10C 13 Stars on Reverse VF30 PCGS. JR-1, R.5. Two die varieties are known for 1804 dimes, having either 13 or 14 stars on the reverse. Both varieties are considered R.5, meaning that the surviving population ranges from 30 to 75 coins each. More important, that means there are less than 150 surviving 1804 dimes in all grades, making this issue as rare as coins such as the 1796 half dollar or 1794 dollar, although demand for the dime is less. However, date collectors and variety specialists create sufficient demand that examples are nearly impossible to find in the marketplace. This Choice VF piece has pleasing surfaces with deep gold, violet, and gunmetal-blue toning on each side. It is also an exceptional coin for the variety and date, with only 18 finer PCGS and NGC coins certified (6/12).
