Description

1804 JR-1 Dime, XF45
13 Stars Reverse
Condition and Absolute Rarity

1804 10C 13 Stars on Reverse XF45 PCGS. JR-1, R.5. Two varieties of 1804 have different star counts on the reverse, with 13 Stars on the JR-1 and 14 Stars on the JR-2. Sometimes called the "Needle Beak," the eagle's lower beak is long and straight, extending entirely through the adjacent star.
The two 1804 varieties are rare, and both are also condition rarities in the series. The Draped Bust dimes of 1801 through 1804 are elusive dates that provide collectors with a major hurdle, although the three earlier dates require much less effort to locate.
Combining the two varieties, the finest PCGS certified pieces include: XF45 (4), AU50 (1), AU53 (4), AU55 (1), and AU58 (1). That service has never examined a Mint State piece, and has only seen seven submissions finer than the present specimen. The NGC Census Report tells a similar tale, with a single amazing MS63 coin that was certified in August 2011. Others include: XF45 (2), AU55 (2), and AU58 (2). Those totals include possible resubmissions, still showing a mere dozen certification events of pieces finer than this example (11/11).
This Choice XF specimen combines pewter-gray surfaces with lovely reddish-gold and pale blue toning. The surfaces show a few marks including a tiny reverse rim bruise at 6 o'clock. Only a few other scattered marks are evident. Spirited bidding is expected when collectors compete for this specimen.
Ex: Superior (7/2005), lot 952, which realized $35,650.(Registry values: P8) (NGC ID# 236N, PCGS# 4474)
