Description

1796 Small Date, Large Letters Dollar
B-4, BB-61, Sharp XF45 Example

1796 $1 Small Date, Large Letters XF45 PCGS. B-4, BB-61, R.3. Bowers-Borckardt Die State I (late) or II (early). The wide date with the slanted to the left is the tipoff for the obverse die. The crowded AMER on the Large Letters reverse confirms the die pairing. The curl at the top of Liberty's head is complete and shows three arcs in State I, and two arcs and disconnected in State II; this intermediate state is three arcs, disconnected (numismatics is more art than science). This is a generously detailed and lustrous example with much eye appeal. Silver-white surfaces show glints of gold and dove-gray. Light diagonal adjustment marks on the obverse are well-hidden among the hair details. A great-looking coin, despite a couple of thin scrapes in the left obverse field.(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 24X3, PCGS# 6860)
