Pleasing 1798 B-4 Knobbed 9 Dollar, XF401798 $1 Large Eagle, Knobbed 9, Five Stripes XF40 NGC. B-4, BB-92, R.5. Die State II. Line Star Pattern. Five shield lines with a leaf below the left serif of I in AMERICA. Star 8 is distant from Y, much farther than the distance between star 7 and L or star 13 and the drapery. This example is a later die state with a crack from the second T of STATES, down to the left through various design elements, to the N of UNITED. Attractive light gray surfaces with considerable gold toning. The usual light abrasions are evident, along with central reverse adjustment marks. This example is among the finer specimens of this variety, and it has much sharper detail than usually seen, with only slight central weakness. The majority of known specimens grade Fine or VF, with few at the XF grade level.
Ex: Bowers and Merena (11/2002), lot 1924; Jim Matthews; Harry Laibstain (10/2003).
