Description:
1798 B-15, BB-112 Silver Dollar, MS61
Census Level Specimen
1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9 MS61 ANACS. B-15, BB-112, R.3. This Mint State piece meets the description of Die State III in the new Bowers early dollar reference. Die State III calls for a small and spindly star 13, and notes that a die crack extends vertically from the left shield point to the ribbon. However, we believe that "die crack" is actually a engraving scratch as it appears on every example of the variety we have seen. Stack's Bowers Galleries and Spectrum Group International, Inc. where the publishers earlier this year of The Encyclopedia of United States Silver Dollars, 1793-1804.

Apricot and mauve patina enriches this silky early dollar. Liberty's jaw has a moderate handling mark, but the surfaces are surprisingly unabraded. The eagle's head and a few upper reverse stars are not fully struck, as is common for the type due to the opposite and relatively high relief of Liberty's shoulder. The dies are rotated slightly counterclockwise. This example is listed in the "Notable Specimens" for BB-112 as the Long Beach Specimen, one of only five Mint State examples of the variety listed in the new silver dollar reference. While the "Notable Specimens" listing is not intended as a true Condition Census, it does provide a strong indication of what is available.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 24X6, PCGS# 6873)
