Description:
1798 Draped Bust Dollar, XF45
Small Eagle, 15 Stars, B-2, BB-81
1798 $1 Small Eagle, 15 Stars XF45 PCGS. B-2, BB-81, R.3. Bowers-Borckardt Die State II. A major design change took place on the silver dollar in 1798 when the Small Eagle reverse was replaced by the Heraldic Eagle motif partway through the year. Only two die varieties of the Small Eagle type were struck in 1798 and this coin represents the slightly scarcer BB-81 variety, easily recognized by the 15 stars on the obverse. This was the only use of the obverse die, but the hardy reverse was used to strike the 1795 BB-51, 1796 BB-62, BB-63, and BB-66, 1797 BB-72, and the present 1798 BB-81 varieties.

This coin is an attractive Choice XF specimen with well-detailed design elements that retain much of their original design detail. Like most examples seen, the obverse devices show sharper detail than the reverse elements. Pleasing silver-gray and blue-steel patina blankets the lightly abraded surfaces. A few light adjustment marks are present on the upper obverse, hardly noticeable without magnification. Population: 7 in 45, 8 finer (6/13).
