Description:
Mint State 1799 Dollar, 7x6 Stars
B-8, BB-165, Advanced Die State
1799 $1 7x6 Stars MS60 NGC. B-8, BB-165, R.3. Bowers-Borckardt Die State III (or later). The numerous heavy die cracks on each side of this Mint State 1799 dollar are the key to its attribution, as the obverse, in particular, resembles other 1799-dated varieties. The BB-165 obverse, however, displays a die chip above star and recutting at an inner point of star 10, along with a lateral die crack through star 7-LIBE and a diagonal one through TY. The crack through LIBE is accompanied by another adjacent one through ERT, and that area of the die is buckled, creating a bulge at the obverse rim of the coin. Extensive die rust is sprinkled throughout the obverse, most prominent at the 17 in the date and the fields near stars 1 and 2. The reverse shows all the die cracks for the latest BB die state. Several stars on the reverse, below the clouds, are either weak or missing, whether from a weak strike or die lapping. Full luster appears on silvery surfaces that show a slight pinkish tinge under a light. A few marks account for the grade, most notably a good-size dig on the forward bust of Liberty. This is an excellent potential acquisition for a collector specializing in advanced die states.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 24X7, PCGS# 6878)
