Description:
Elusive 1799 B-4 Irregular Date Dollar, 15 Reverse Stars
1799 $1 Irregular Date, 15 Stars Reverse VF25 PCGS. B-4, BB-153, R.4. Die State II. Reiver Die State b. First 9 high and tilted left. This variety shares the reverse die with the B-3 overdate variety, and it is in an earlier die state on this example, meaning that at least this one variety with a normal date was struck before the overdates. Although numismatic tradition suggests that the overdates are recorded first in the lineup of any series, such an ordering does not necessarily follow the actual emission sequence. This specimen represents the later die state of the variety with border clash marks outside the stars to the left, and also with several obverse die cracks. Deep steel and gray-brown with lighter grayish-gold and iridescent toning on the devices. This is a visually appealing example of the variety, clearly more attractive than many others certified in the same grade. The B-4 dollar variety is considered by specialists to be R.4, but it is probably high in that range. Examples are elusive in any grade.
Ex: American Numismatic Rarities (12/2004), lot 1496.
