Exceedingly Rare Early Die Variety 1799 Dollar, B-9, Die State I, MS61 NGC1799 $1 MS61 NGC. B-9, BB-166, Die State I. An exceedingly rare and significant early die state of Bolender-9, known by specialists as the Apostrophe Variety, named for the die crack from the border just after the final S of STATES into the field. Usually identified by this feature, however, this is Die State I in Dave Bowers' Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, with no evidence of either the reverse crack (apostrophe) after the S of STATES, or the typically seen die break beneath the 1 in the date. Luster glows beneath dusky dark brown color and darker steel toning. A tiny rim bump is visible on the obverse at 5 o'clock, but this only affects a portion of four dentils. This is a spectacular early Silver Dollar in full Mint State preservation, and one that was "never seen" by either Bowers or Borckardt.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 24X7, PCGS# 6878)
