Highly Collectible, Mint State 1799/8 Bust Dollar1799/8 $1 15 Stars Reverse MS62 NGC. B-3, BB-141. A double engraving error: the second 9 in the date was punched over a previous 8 on the obverse, and on the reverse 15 stars were punched into the upper field rather than the standard 13. Interestingly, to correct the mispunching blunder on the stars, the engraver hand tooled the outermost clouds to cover the offending stars. However, the two innermost points of each remain.
This overdate is listed as a separate type in A Guide Book of United States Coins. Most collectors of early Dollars will include both a "15 star" and a "13 star" reverse dollar in their collections. The 1799/8 Overdate has always enjoyed strong demand in the marketplace and realizes a slight premium over non-overdated early Dollars.
The obverse and reverse of this specimen are toned in shades of coppery-gold, red, and gray, with slightly darker coloration over the obverse of the coin. Some scattered marks can be seen under the toning but are considered normal for the assigned grade. (#6883) (Registry values: P1, N21500) (NGC ID# 24X8, PCGS# 6883)
