Appealing Near-Mint State 1800 'Dotted Date' Dollar1800 $1 AU58 NGC. B-14, BB-194, R.3. Die State III, early. A scarce die state of the well known Dotted Date variety, which is extremely popular from its listing as one of the Guide Book varieties. The variety derives its name from the dotlike die flaws in and under the first 0 in the date. In this die state, which Bowers and Borckardt call "scarce," there is a hairline crack rising from the rim through star 1 and into the field. A reverse crack runs from D through the wing to S. No clash marks, however, are visible at OF. This piece has pleasing copper-silver-gray surfaces that show just a trace of rub on Liberty's cheek. An appealing near-Mint State example.
