Description

Lustrous "12 Arrows" 1800 Dollar, XF40

1800 $1 XF40 NGC. B-17, BB-196, R.1. Intermediate Die State II-III. This is a nice, lustrous example of the "12 Arrows" 1800 Dollar, another Guidebook variety. The obverse and the reverse dies were only used to strike this one die marriage and this variety is quickly attributable by the clash mark along the neck on the obverse. At one time, this clash mark was considered diagnostic for the variety. However, in the January 1994 issue of the John Reich Journal, the official publication of the John Reich Collectors Society, Mark Borckardt reported an example of an 1800 B-17, BB-196 without the clash mark showing. Then a second specimen of this rare early die state was reported in the July 1998 issue of the John Reich Journal. This die marriage can be attributed by the die flaw that extends to the left from just above the foot of the 1 in date (showing clearly on this specimen). Both the obverse and reverse are toned in shades of medium gray and gold. This is an attractive and lustrous specimen for the grade.
From the Michael Hering Collection. (NGC ID# 24X9, PCGS# 6887)
