A Beautifully Toned Gem 1800 "Dotted Date" Dollar, Among the Finest Known1800 $1 Dotted Date MS65 NGC. B-14, BB-194. R.3. Intermediate Die State IV-V. The first of two phenomenal Gem 1800 "Dotted Date" Dollars. And what a Gem this is. This piece has the appearance of coming from an "old time collection," such as the early dollars from the World's Greatest Collection Sale. In fact, there is a tiny nick close to Liberty's chin that makes us wonder if there isn't a chance that this might be the Boyd Specimen, noted in the Bowers Silver Dollar book under "Notable Specimens" with a "Nick on the chin." Unfortunately, we may never know as the Boyd Specimen was not plated in either the World's Greatest Collection Sale or the 1949 ANA Sale. The coin has bright, satin-like luster and is toned a beautiful, deep bluish-gray with gold and rose highlights throughout.
This beautiful "Dotted Date" was struck from a slightly later state of the dies than the MS66 NGC specimen (see next lot). This example has all of the die breaks listed under Die State IV in Bowers, with die rust very evident on the obverse.
Condition Census: This and the MS66 piece are most likely among the finest known.
From the Michael Hering Collection. (PCGS# 6889)
