Description:
1802/1 Narrow Date Dollar, B-1, BB-231
Colorful Near-Mint State Example

1802/1 $1 Narrow Date AU58 NGC. B-1, BB-231, R.4. The Guide Book lists four varieties for the 1802 dollars, including the 1802/1 overdates with Wide or Narrow Date and the Normal Date with the same attributes. All four are more or less rare as Guide Book varieties. The 1802/1 overdate with Narrow Date comprises two die pairings, the present R.4 B-1, BB-231 and the R.3 B-4, BB-232. The two different Narrow Date overdate obverses can be easily distinguished, however: The BB-231 shows the 8 in the date centered and upright between the 1 and 0 but entered too low, while BB-232 shows the 8 equidistant between 1 and 0 bur tilted to the right at its top. This piece displays underlying brightness covered with a layer of medium-density, variegated gray, rose, and blue patina on each side. The strike is slightly soft in the centers of each side, but there are no mentionable marks on either side. This variety is quite conditionally rare in so fine a grade. For the 1802/1 Narrow Date, both varieties, Census: 18 in 58, 7 finer (1/13). We suspect most of those are the BB-232.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 24XC, PCGS# 6898)
