Scarce B-1 1803 Small 3 Dollar, VF351803 $1 Small 3 VF35 NGC. B-1, BB-251, R.4. The Dollars dated 1803 come in two major types, the "Small 3" and the "Large 3." This is the 1803 "Small 3" type, with a "thin" top to the 3 and with the 3 "slanting toward the 0." This variety is extremely rare in higher grades. The Bowers book listed the Condition Census as "45 (Multiples)" in 1993. This cataloger is aware of one specimen grading AU55 NGC, and as always, there may be other AU specimens known today. The otherwise monochromatic medium gray toning that covers each side is accented by lighter brilliantish-tan color over the highpoints of the design. A couple of tiny, shallow planchet flaws on Liberty's cheek serve as pedigree identifiers for this scarce, early Dollar.
