Description

1795 BD-1 Eagle, AU50
Early Die State
First Eagle Variety

1795 $10 13 Leaves AU50 PCGS. Breen-6830, Taraszka-1, BD-1, High R.3. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. Both dies of this early state specimen are perfect with no cracks, clash marks, or lapping. It is undoubtedly among the first eagles minted at Philadelphia in September 1795. The production of about 5,000 ten dollar gold pieces dated 1795 was the result of three obverse dies and three reverse dies, combined to form five die marriages. While large quantities of half eagles were exported to Europe in trade, most quarter eagles and eagles remained in this country.
The tip of the 5 overlaps the drapery, and star 11 touches the Y on this obverse. The left serif of the Y extends over the adjacent T. Once the relationship of TY and star 11 is learned, attribution becomes immediate as the obverse die was retired after its only use for 1795 BD-1. The 13 Leaves reverse, with a leaf tip joined to the lower left curve of the U, is found in early die states on BD-1 and later states on BD-2, proving the emission order of the two varieties.
A pleasing piece, this green-gold specimen has traces of luster near the borders with hints of orange-gold in the outer margins. The strike is nicely centered with full border denticles. The central obverse is indistinct, the result of minor adjustment marks on the reverse. A few trivial surface marks and faint scratches are mostly hidden in the design elements.(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 25ZT, PCGS# 8551)
