Description

1795 BD-1 Eagle, AU55
Early Die State

1795 $10 13 Leaves AU55 PCGS. BD-1, R.3. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. There is no evidence of die cracks, clash marks, or other defects on this early state specimen. The five stars along the right obverse border are all extremely close, and star 11 nearly touches the top of the Y in LIBERTY. That letter is tilted right so that its upper left serif points above the adjacent T. Small die lumps at the left top of the Y appear to extend that letter over the T. The reverse has a leaf that touches the left curve of the U in UNITED.

Following half eagle production that began at the end of July 1795, the eagles were introduced in September of that year. The BD-1 die marriage is the most plentiful of the year, and it is first in the Bass-Dannreuther emission sequence. It is also an early die state, so the present Choice AU specimen is possibly one of the first eagles ever struck at the Philadelphia Mint.

In all grades, John Dannreuther suggests a surviving population of 225 to 325 coins, although the actual number may be somewhat higher, perhaps approaching 400 examples in all grades. This Choice AU specimen is highly attractive with rich honey-gold fields surrounding bright green-gold devices, exhibiting sharp design motifs, and scattered surface marks that are consistent with the grade. The reflective surfaces with traces of mirrored fields support the early production theory for this early die state piece.(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 25ZT, PCGS# 8551)
