1796 $10 AU55 PCGS....
Very Scarce 1796 Small Eagle Ten Dollar AU551796 $10 AU55 PCGS. Breen-6832, B. 1-A, Taraszka-6, R.4. Only a single die pairing was used in this second year of Ten Dollar production. Although its mintage of 4,146 pieces is comparable to the 1795, the 1796 Eagle is far more challenging in all grades. This issue has the added desirability among today's collectors as being the only 1795-1804 eagle with 8 stars left and 8 right, made necessary by the addition of Tennessee as the young nation's sixteenth state. This appealing representative is generally a light yellow-gold and the protected areas retain a fair degree of mildly prooflike luster. A few hairline scratches on and near Liberty's cap are relatively inoffensive reminders of the coin's brief circulation. Population: 16 in 55, 17 finer (11/04).
