Rare AU53 1797 Heraldic Eagle Ten1797 $10 Large Eagle AU53 NGC. Breen-6835, Taraszka-11, BD-3, R.5. According to the new Bass-Dannreuther reference, BD-3 is the scarcest of the three Heraldic Eagle die marriages for this date. There is no star beneath the eagle's beak, and this promptly separates the variety from BD-2 and BD-4. Type demand is drawn to the 1799 and 1801 dates, since the 1797 is clearly more scarce. A richly detailed apricot-gold half eagle from the first year of the Heraldic Eagle type. This subdued piece is notable for its lack of mentionable marks, although for pedigree purposes we note a curly, brief lintmark at 7 o'clock on the reverse. As usual for BD-3, a spindly die crack journeys through the second 7 in the date, and connects it to both the bust and the rim.(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25ZY, PCGS# 8559)
