Description

1797 Capped Bust Right Ten, VF25
Large Eagle, BD-4 Variety

1797 $10 Large Eagle VF25 NGC. Breen-6834, BD-4, High R.4. The reverse design for the ten dollar gold piece was modified in 1797, with the BD-1 variety featuring the old Small Eagle design, while the other three varieties display the Heraldic Eagle motif. The present coin represents the scarce BD-4 die marriage, with a long thick neck on the eagle, and an irregular cross pattern on the reverse stars. The reported mintage for the Heraldic Eagle type was 10,940 pieces, and the BD-4 variety probably accounted for 3,500-5,000 examples of this total. John Dannreuther estimates a surviving population of 90-110 pieces in all grades.
The coin offered here shows considerable wear on the devices, but all lettering and major detail is still present. The fields exhibit a few minor abrasions, but no adjustment marks are evident. This coin is a very acceptable, no problems representative of this early eagle.(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25ZY, PCGS# 8559)
