1798/7 $10 7x6 Stars AU55 NGC....
Extremely Rare 1798/7 7x6 Stars Eagle AU55, Ex: Byron Reed1798/7 $10 7x6 Stars AU55 NGC. Breen-6837, B. 2-A, Taraszka-10, R.6. With a mintage of only 842 pieces, it is easy to see why the 1798/7 with the 7x6 star arrangement is the second rarest early Eagle, being close behind the very elusive 1795 Nine Leaves. A reliable estimate places the number of survivors in all grades at a mere 16 to 18 pieces. The obverse die used for this variety apparently shattered early on, as survivors invariably display a series of prominent die cracks, as is true with the example offered here. This important high grade representative is clearly recognized as the former Byron Reed specimen by a curling fragment in the obverse field to the right of Liberty's nose. A subtle reddish patina clings to the devices on both sides. While it has only been one year since we sold the Farouk/Carter specimen of this important gold rarity (a PCGS MS62 which sold for $218,500) it may be several years before another 1798/7 7x6 Stars comes up for sale.
