Challenging 1798/7 9x4 Stars Eagle AU501798/7 $10 9x4 Stars AU50 NGC. Breen-6836, B. 1-A, Taraszka-9, R.4. The Mint's production of 1798-dated Eagles, all overdates, was limited to 900 pieces of the 9x4 Stars variety and 842 pieces of the 7x6 Stars variety. Despite the similarity in mintages, the latter variety is considered to be the more elusive of the two. Of course, this takes nothing away from the rarity of the 1798/7 9x4 Stars, as only 80-100 pieces are believed to survive of the issue. Offered here is a lightly circulated representative that exhibits strong detail and much remaining luster beneath a coating of reddish patina. A wispy die crack at 12 o'clock on obverse advances through the L in LIBERTY toward the center of the portrait. Another microscopic crack through the R has not fully developed. Faint adjustment marks are also seen along the right obverse edge. In what is undoubtedly a landmark offering of early Tens, this challenging 1798/7 9x4 Stars Eagle should not be overlooked. Population: 1 in 50, 2 finer (11/04).
