Lightly Circulated 1798/7 Ten Dollar, 9x4 Stars1798/7 $10 9x4 Stars AU50 PCGS. Breen-6836, Taraszka-9, BD-1. Bass-Dannreuther Obverse Die State b / Reverse Die State b. The two varieties of 1798 eagles are both 1798/7 overdates in reality, with the two varieties, BD-1 and BD-2, respectively, differing in the obverse star arrangements (9x4 versus 7x6); both share a carried-over reverse die from 1797. The 9x4 star arrangement is the most asymmetrical in U.S. coinage but allows LIBERTY to be set off more easily slanting down the right obverse rim; the 7x6 arrangement, conversely, allows LIBERTY to be nearly centered and to pass over Liberty's tall cap. The BD-1 is very scarce, with only 80-100 pieces surviving according to Bass-Dannreuther, yet still far more available than the BD-2, numbered at 20-30 survivors.
This Almost Uncirculated specimen of the BD-1 exhibits pronounced reddish-gold color, with light, even wear distributed over the high points. There are no mentionable planchet adjustment marks, and abrasions are minimal for the AU grade level. Another prize for the early gold specialists.(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 25ZZ, PCGS# 8560)
