Description:
Rare 1798/7 Ten Dollar, MS61 PCGS
1798/7 $10 9x4 Stars MS61 PCGS. B. 1-A, Taraszka-9, R.4. The eagles of 1798 are seldom offered in any grade at public auction, and we are very pleased to be able to offer two Mint State 9x4 Stars and one of the very rare 7x6 Star variants in this sale. Breen estimates that perhaps only 18-20 pieces are known of this issue out of an original mintage of 900 coins. Of that tiny number of survivors three are known to be mutilated, six are in Mint State, and the remainder are in the VF to AU grade range. This is a lovely example that shows the usual bright green-gold coloration common to early tens. The obverse has a number of very shallow, horizontal adjustment marks. Because they are so shallow they at first appear to be roller marks, but since they cover most of that side, are present on both the devices as well as in the fields, and they are not exactly parallel, they can only be adjustment marks. Needless to say, they do little to detract from the coin's overall attractiveness because they are so slightly impressed into the coin's surface; nevertheless, we feel compelled to mention them for accuracy's sake. Slightly soft in the center of each side, both obverse and reverse are well impressed elsewhere, and there are no obvious or distracting marks that one could easily use as pedigree identifiers. Population: 3 in 61, 0 finer (10/03).(#8560) (Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 25ZZ, PCGS# 8560)
